One of the many reasons I haven’t posted much lately is that I’ve been busy planning and executing a 40th anniversary party for my parents. It was last week and we had a wonderful time – I’m REALLY glad we did it. But boy, was it a lot of work! Mainly because the party was in my living room which has basically been neglected ever since we moved in. We threw in what furniture we had and then just left the rest for later. Well, this party meant that “later” had arrived.
The first problem was that there was no surface in the entire room on which to set food or drinks. The second problem was this corner of the room, completely forlorn, unused and unfurnished.
Compounding these problems (as always) was our limited budget.

It was a little too tall and neither of us loved the color. Luckily, the bottom shelf screwed right off (so easily I almost couldn’t believe it) and a couple of coats of walnut gel stain took care of the color problem. Here it is looking much more at home:
By the way, all of the serving dishes pictured here came from the Christmas Tree Shop for $5-8 each. I LOVE the bargains there! And the “artwork” behind them is Marimekko fabric framed in Ikea frames — a great budget-friendly solution for adding some color to your walls.
This anniversary banner (made with my new Cricut…did I tell you I got one for my birthday? This was its maiden voyage!) added some fun fall colors without breaking the bank.
Here it is all together and ready for a party:
